The résumé

Allen Davis · founder of the vacancy

Al Davis is why this franchise cannot tell the difference between a football team and a lawsuit. He coached. He ran the AFL. He took the Raiders and spent the rest of his life daring the league to stop him. He moved them to Los Angeles because Oakland would not build him a palace. He moved them back because Los Angeles would not either. He sued the NFL and won. He made “Commitment to Excellence” a slogan you could print on a jacket while the product on the field became a personality cult with a depth chart.

The late years were the tell. He drafted JaMarcus Russell first overall. He hired and fired in public. He kept the scouts and the coaches in separate rooms so they would not “buddy up.” He left his son a religion, a lawsuit habit, and a roster that thought toughness was a press conference. October 8, 2011. The name stayed on the letterhead. The myth stayed in the gift shop. The winning did not.

Every bad decision after him still borrows his voice. Mark inherited the keys and the catchphrase. The Black Hole still chants a man who treated cities like rental cars. Vegas is just the latest forwarding address he taught them to print.

The house read

Al Davis is not the tragedy. Al Davis is the author. The son is the reprint. The stadium is the gift shop. Just Win Baby is on the wall. Can’t Win Baby is the hall.
