HALL OF
SHAME

Can't Win Baby!

Raiders fan, right

Not a hall of fame. A museum of receipts.

Desk is the week. This room is the franchise. New exhibits as the tape requires.

Exhibit 001

Super Bowl XXXVII — the Gruden special

January 26, 2003. San Diego. Tampa Bay 48, Oakland 21. Jon Gruden, traded for draft picks and a suitcase of spite, used the Raiders’ own offense against them on the biggest stage the building has reached since. Five interceptions. A rout dressed as a reunion. They have not been back. The plaque stays lit.

Exhibit 002

JaMarcus Russell, first overall, 2007

The pick that became a punchline and then a case study. A franchise that talks toughness drafted a quarterback and then watched the position become a tourist attraction. The tape is public. The excuses were not.

Exhibit 003

The Tuck Rule — January 19, 2002

Snow in New England. A fumble that was ruled an incomplete pass. The Raiders led. Then they did not. Then they spent twenty years talking about a memo instead of winning the next game. A rulebook is not a personality. Neither is a grievance.

Exhibit 004

Oakland, Los Angeles, Oakland, Las Vegas

Four letterheads. One habit: leave. Oakland built the myth. Los Angeles got the farce. Oakland got the apology tour. Vegas got a black refrigerator and a gift shop. A team that cannot sit still wants you to call it destiny. It is a forwarding address.

Exhibit 005

3–13, 2014 — and the sequel

They have been historically bad in more than one century. 2014 was 3–13. 2025 was 3–14. The numbers rhyme because the franchise does. Different quarterbacks, same laminated excuse sheet. Last year is not ancient history. It is last year.

Exhibit 006

The 2025 season: 3–14

Fourth in the AFC West. A ten-game kind of weather. A closing win over Kansas City that felt like a clerical error. Opening night 2026 is supposed to make you forget the arithmetic. This plaque exists so you do not.

Exhibit 007

Tom Brady, owner

He bought a team the way some men buy a boat. Hall of Fame jawline. Midlife letterhead. Suite-level tourist. Tommy Boys football is proximity sold as competence: stand near the banners, invoice the hope, collect applause for a running back. The 3–14 happened with his name on the building. Week 1 and Week 2 happened with his name on the building. The rings on the other wall are not transferable.

Exhibit 008

Allegiant Stadium

A sponsored refrigerator with goalposts. Sixty-odd thousand seats, a light show, and a tradition that fits in a carry-on. The roof does not make them good. It makes them loud in a box. Call it Allegiant. The honest name is Temporary.
