Paid like a champion. Filed like a rental.

Fourth city. Still no ring. Still blocking the kid.

Cut in Atlanta. Started here so the first overall pick can take notes. Two wins against a tourist and a corpse.

The résumé

Kirk Daniel Cousins · QB · No. 8

He is a 38-year-old backup who keeps getting the job because front offices are cowards. Michigan State could not get him drafted until the fourth round, 102nd, after Washington had already spent a first-round pick on someone else. He spent a career collecting fully guaranteed money and zero Super Bowl appearances as a starter who mattered. The catchphrase was “You like that.” The league liked the invoice. The trophy case stayed empty. That is the introduction.

Washington. Minnesota. Atlanta. Each stop ended the same way: yards, interceptions, a press conference about process, then a new city. The Falcons gave him the largest total-value free-agent deal in league history at the time — four years, up to $180 million — and cut him March 11, 2026, after two seasons. He had already pulled about $100 million out of that contract. Career earnings reported north of $320 million. In that neighborhood of pay, he is the one without a title. Atlanta: 12–10 as a starter, 24th in EPA per dropback, sixteen interceptions in 2024, ten games and an 84.8 rating in 2025. Then a 3–14 franchise needed a body who would not scare the owner on Sunday.

The Raiders signed him April 6, 2026. On September 2 they named him the starter over Fernando Mendoza, first overall, the pick they used a 3–14 season to acquire. Cousins is what you start when you do not trust the thing you just bought. Through two games: 40 of 59, 413 yards, six scores, three picks. Miami and an 0–2 Chargers team. The comment section called it a rebirth. It is a man on a one-year bridge charging rent to a rookie.

The house read

Kirk Cousins is the product you buy when you draft a future and then flinch. He will complete enough passes to keep the lights on and throw enough interceptions to remind you why the flinch was stupid. He gets paid whether Mendoza sits or rusts. Four markets have rented the same act. You like that. The check cleared. January did not.
